Girls Who Code Volunteer Club Instructor

Greetings fellow Brown Girls,

We found an opportunity that might appeal to some of you! Girls Who Code is looking for volunteer club instructors to teach other girls how to code. This is an unpaid internship opportunity for our collegiate STEM-ers. Here are the details:

"Overview:

The total time commitment is approximately 50 hours over the course of the academic school year (Fall 2015 – Spring/Summer 2016) and most Clubs meet weekly for two hours per session. Responsibilities include hosting regular Club sessions, submitting completed student projects and code to Girls Who Code, and working with Girls Who Code staff to organize activities that expose girls to the tech world, including field trips to tech companies and enlisting guest speakers. The instructor must also fulfill communication and reporting requirements in accordance with Girls Who Code Standards. At the very least, Volunteer Instructors typically have had three semesters of undergraduate CS experience and possess intermediate knowledge of data structures and algorithms.

The application involves a brief, 10 question pseudocode quiz, on which a score of 7/10 is required to pass. Some experience working with youth is certainly advantageous, though not required. A Volunteer must be prepared to commit 2-3 hours per week to instructing his/her Club. We vet all Volunteer Instructor applicants, so they must also be prepared to pass a state/federal background check.

Why Volunteer?

  • Expose girls in underserved areas to a comprehensive and unique CS education

  • Empower young women in CS and help transform tech into a better, more inclusive industry

  • Develop powerful leadership skills while positively impacting your community

  • Interact with large tech companies and industry leaders through field trips and guest speakers

  • Join a community of professionals and students who share your passion for gender parity

Please complete the application at girlswhocodeclubs.fluidreview.com. There is a short form portion in which you will be asked a series of basic questions regarding yourself and your CS background. This is where you can identify the specific Club host site to which you would like to be matched. If you do not see any convenient locations in your area, definitely consider starting a new Club at in your community! The application will link you to a 10 question content quiz. It is fairly standard and uses pseudo-code to touch on basic algorithmic comprehension; a score of 7/10 is required to pass the quiz. After both of these components have been completed, we will ask that you either upload a recent background check (from the past 2-3 years) or undergo a background check through us. We will not begin to review your application until all of these components are completed individually and submitted as a whole."

Let us know if you decide to apply!

Best,

--The BGLS Team
